Pinch Design Reception Signage

Great idea for the office. This signage idea for a reception by Pinch Design could be put to good use in any office. Simple ideas always work best.

Patrick Jouin.

Gilt restaurant and Bar

More modern oldness. I really like what Patrick Jouin did to the interior for the Gilt Bar & Restaurant in New York. Another example of something modern contrasting against an older style. Rather than looking out of place, it complements both styles.

Opinions Wanted

Reader Survey: Your Opinions Wanted! I’m interested in your opinions/thoughts/advice on Things of Random Coolness. Like the general advice for daily fruit & veg consumption, I try to post 5 items a day, but it’s harder than you might think. I’ve set myself this psychological quota, but I kind of feel that sometimes I might be posting things that I don’t really like that much just to hit that goal.

Some of you may have noticed I didn’t post anything at all yesterday (sorry, I couldn’t fit it in around other commitments), and I felt really guilty about it. So I’d like to make it up to you by making it better!

So, I guess what I’m asking for is some info on what appeals to you about this site? What would make it better? What time of day do you read the site (whould you prefer if posts were made at a certain time everyday)? Am I too obsessed with modern chair design? Would you prefer it if it was more or less personal? Does anyone even read what I write, or do you just look at the pictures and click on the links? Anything you have to say, good or bad, would be really, really appreciated!

J H Lynch

I’ve always has an affection for this work. The retro-ish kitsch style of J H Lynch is a guilty pleasure of mine. I don’t care what anyone says, it’s cool.

Tomokazu Matsuyama.

Tomokazu Matsuyama

Beautiful artwork from an amazing artist. Although Tomokazu Matsuyama has been getting quite a lot of exposure from other blogs at the moment, I’m still going to post it anyway (I try and stay away from anything that’s already been posted by other similar blogs - whats the point in 10 sites all showcasing the same stuff?).

Being an ex-art degree person myself, I find it very hard to simply enjoy artwork for what it is. I always seem to have to trace the influences of other artists in anything I see. But with Tomokazu Matsuyama I can enjoy the work in itself, without having to catagorise it (even if the very distinct style of colourful birds & horse-like creatures has a very picasso-esque feel to it.)

Tomokazu Matsuyama is one artist who’s work I would love to own one day.

Architecture in strange enviroments. I really like the angular form of the planned Guollas Montain Cottage by Sami Rintala. It’s not often you see a cool building structure placed in the middle of a frozen wasteland.

Stella McCartney Funnel Neck Jacket.

Stella McCartney Funnel Neck Jacket

My girlfriend is going to kill me for this! I’ve been running Things of Random Coolness for a few months, and while I haven’t been writing it in any kind of secretive manner, I didn’t go out of my way to tell anyone around me (I didn’t think anyone would be that interested). Consequently, my girlfriend didn’t know I was doing it, and when she found out a few days ago, she went wild. In seems that, although it’s not in the same league as cheating on your partner, not informing them that you write a blog is akin to keeping somekind of secret life.

Anyway, in an attempt to get back into the good books with my girlfriend, and to provide some content that appeals to the female readership (which seems to be quite sizable), I’m highlighting Funnel Neck Jacket by Stella McCartney. My girlfriend highlighted it to me, so now she can feel part of my “secret life” too!

Joseph Armchair.

Forniture by Parentesiquadra

All you need is some rolled up felt and a couple of steel rods. The simplicity of the Joseph Armchair designed by Lothar Windels is what attracts me to this chair.

Designed by Lothar Windels, this armchair pays homage to Joseph Beuys. It is made of a roll of felt and a roll of polyethylene joined by three steal rods. The outer shape is simply the result of it’s structure.

Serge Seidlitz

I love Serge Seidlitz. The illustrator Serge Seidlitz is amazing. Seriously. Just go and check out his website to see his fantastic work. I really love his Poster available from Play Lounge

He’s now definitely up there as one of my favorite illustrators.

Helve Chair.

Helve Chair by Viable

Chair Love. I love the modernist clean lines of the Helve Chair and the way the foot stool tucks away neatly underneath the chair when not in use.
